So now that you have read the story...Can you answer the question of which is more important Culture or Protection.
This is truly disturbing because your 8 year old daughter was physically harmed and the only thing you care about is how this will make your family name appear to outsiders. Now don't get me wrong, I am the first person to respect other cultures because I think its fascinating and it is primarily what makes people different aside from the obvious...But isn't there an exception to some rules. Chewing gum was the object of her desire which tells of the mental capacity of the little girl..She is a refugee so who knows how much english she speaks...
It is just hurtful that pride, in this case, has overridded compassion, parenting, love, support, safety etc...
But there is no room for judgement from me...just confusion!

Well this is a really sad case and I feel terribly horrible for the little girl. Not only will she have to heal from the physical and emotional wounds of being brutally gang raped, but also now the emotional wounds of being shunned by her family.
Howeveer, the fact is that in many cultures women are not seen as people, rather property. And in those cultures a clean, pretty, virgin can be sold...I mean married off to advance the wealth and status of a family. But if she's used (i.e. no longer a virgin, no matter how she got that way). She's worthless.
You see in the article they say the family believes that rape victims are responsible for what happens to them b/c the tempt the men into raping them. Its a sordid horrible way of thinking, but that's how it is.
Another alarming thing for me though was this was done by boys age 9 to 14... Seriously, where do boys this young even get the idea of luring a young girl and raping her from. I know they are hormonal and all, but doesn't anyone else think that was a pretty heinous crime for boys that young?
